Steven M. Pinsky MD Resident Research Award

About the Award

The Illinois Radiological Society (IRS) has established the Steven M. Pinsky Resident Research Award, a $1,000 cash prize awarded to a radiology or radiation oncology resident or fellow for an outstanding research paper presented at the IRS Annual Meeting.

The purpose of the award is to encourage radiology and radiation oncology members-in-training to do research; to enhance the academic careers of radiology residents; and to promote the inter-institutional exchange of information.

When the Call for Abstracts is open, abstracts must be submitted online on the IRS web site. Abstracts submitted may have been previously presented at other radiology or radiation oncology meetings. A committee will select papers worthy of presentation at the IRS Annual Meeting and also select the award winner. The winner of the IRS Resident Research Award will receive a $1,000 cash award. Additionally, residents and fellows selected to presented papers will receive a certificate of merit from the Illinois Radiological Society.

Dr. Pinsky's Bio

The 2004 Illinois Radiological Society Educational Symposium and Annual Meeting marked the inaugural presentation of the Steven M. Pinsky MD Resident Research Award. The Resident Research Award was first proposed and later developed by Dr. Pinsky, and following Dr. Pinsky’s untimely death, the IRS Executive Committee has named the award in Dr. Pinsky’s honor.

Naming the Resident Research Award after Dr. Pinsky was most appropriate as teaching was Dr. Pinsky’s first love in a long and illustrious career, a career that saw him rise to the top of his profession. “What he loved best was being an educator,” said his wife, Sue. “He loved teaching his interns and residents.” Dr. Pinsky excelled not only as an educator, but he also enjoyed an outstanding career in radiology and nuclear medicine. “He was one of the most respected members of the Board of Nuclear Medicine,” said Dr. William Schey, a longtime colleague and friend. “He had an international reputation”.

Dr. Pinsky was born and raised in Milwaukee where his father, Dr. Leo Pinsky, a dentist and professor, instilled in his son an appreciation of both medicine and teaching. Following graduation from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, young Steven Pinsky moved to Chicago to attend Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. During his second year of medical school, he met Sue Rosenzweig on a blind date arranged by friends. They married the following year.

Upon graduation from medical school, Dr. Pinsky entered the radiology residency program at the University of Chicago Hospitals, where he later was appointed chief resident in diagnostic radiology. After completing his residency, he enlisted in the Army, rising to the rank of major and serving at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington.

Dr. Pinsky then returned to Chicago and was appointed chief of nuclear medicine at Michael Reese Hospital. He also served on the faculty of the University of Chicago, in time attaining the title of professor of radiology. He was subsequently appointed chairman of radiology at Michael Reese Hospital and was also elected president of its medical staff. In 1989, Dr. Pinsky was named chairman of the radiology department at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine and chief of radiology at the UIC Medical Center.

During his exceptional career, Dr. Pinsky was particularly involved in organized radiology, serving as president of the Central Chapter of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and president of the Illinois Radiological Society. He was awarded fellowship in both the American College of Radiology and the American College of Nuclear Physicians. In recognition of his outstanding work on behalf of radiology, the Chicago Radiological Society awarded Dr. Pinsky its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, or the Gold Medal. Dr. Pinsky’s generosity and service extended beyond the scope of radiology, donating a room at Michael Reese Hospital, a conference room at the University of Chicago, and a children’s library at the Jewish Community Center in Northbrook.

In 2000, Dr. Pinsky retired from active practice, but he remained active in the Illinois Radiological Society and the American College of Radiology, sharing his expertise and wealth of knowledge while continuing his love of teaching through mentoring younger radiologists. The Steven M. Pinsky MD Resident Research Award recognizes a radiologist who has trained countless physicians, an outstanding physician, excellent teacher and superb leader.
